Based in Lahore, Pakistan, Maryam Jahanzeb Baig (b.1999) is a visual artist who earned her BFA from University of the Punjab in 2022. Her work revolves around the intermingling of archival imagery, reimagining it in oil on clay and wood. She uses the impression of a traditional art form ‘fresco’ to capture the present state of old, historical structures. According to Maryam, “these structures not only constitute the pure essence of those who built them but also embody the rub of those who left their marks on them”. Her choice of medium aids in exhibiting the intentional and unintentional ruins of the walls. Beneath the disintegration, the marks, and the graffiti, she intends to feel the freshness of pigments and richness of culture.
