Colin David was born in 1937 in Pakistan. Hailing from a Christian background, Colin started studying art in the Department of Fine Arts, Punjab University, Lahore, in 1956. He went on to study at the Slade School of Art, London. Colin David was one of Pakistan’s most popular artists in the 1970’s. In a climate of hyper-conservatism, Colin continued to produce works in Pakistan, showcasing them privately to select friends. However, these underground exhibitions caught the attention of roving troublemakers and many of his works were destroyed after one such show. Colin David employed almost architectural composition in his paintings, his deliberate use of space was modernist and considered, and this emphasized the vulnerability of his subjects. Colin David died in 2008 in Pakistan.
